Q 1. Who are you?

A.  The proposers are a group of Christian parents, teachers and professionals with a background in school leadership, finance and project management. They all have families of their own and are keen to offer further choice to parents in the local area.

Q 2. Who will fund the school?

A. City Gates School will be fully funded by the DfE (Department for Education) through the Free School scheme. It will not be privately owned by any organisation.

Q 3. What is a school with a Christian ethos?

A.  Built on the teachings of Jesus Christ, our faith ethos based upon the commonly held virtues of peace, tolerance, kindness, goodness, loyalty, self-control, gentleness, joy and love, will help to build a purposeful learning community. This will be demonstrated through assemblies, in lessons and in daily interactions where children learn how to be productive, active citizens with a strong moral compass.

Q 4. Why do we need a new school with such an ethos in Redbridge?

A.  Currently, all the Christian faith based schools in the area are over-subscribed and have waiting lists in most year groups. CGS will provide additional choice for parents.

Q 5. Who can attend City Gates School?

A. Children aged 4-16. We welcome children of all faiths and none.

Q 6. Does my child have to live in Redbridge?

A. City Gates School will be located in Redbridge, but the school does not have a catchment area. We will admit up to 50% of our pupils based on their Christian faith if the school is oversubscribed.

Q 7. What will the curriculum include?

A. In KS1 & 2 most subjects will be taught through a thematic approach using the International Primary Curriculum (IPC). There will be a particular emphasis on English & Mathematics.

KS3 & 4 will focus on the National Curriculum with an emphasis on academic subjects. However, pupils will be offered curriculum pathways to suit their particular needs at KS4.

Q 8. How will pupils benefit from attending City Gates School?

A. There will be children aged from 4-16 in our all-through school. This will support continuity and will reinforce the concept of a ‘learning journey’ and a sense of real progression. Children will move smoothly from the primary to the secondary phase without the disruptions that traditionally occur.

There will be three forms of entry in the primary phase and only four in the secondary phase. This will help to create a genuine ‘family feel’ in a school where children are nurtured and taught to believe that they can make a positive difference in the world.

Q 9. Who will be the Head teacher?

A. We are in the process of working with the Department for Education (DfE) to appoint an existing senior leader  who shares our vision for the school.

Q 10. Will your teachers be fully qualified?

A. Yes, all of our teachers will have qualified teacher status (QTS) and all staff will be thoroughly vetted through the Disclosure and Barring Service (previously CRB).

Q 11. Who will hold the school to account?

A. The school governing body which will consist of professionals with a background in school leadership, finance and project management, parents, teacher governors and the Principal. City Gates School will also be subject to OFSTED inspections like all other schools.

Q 12. Where will the school be located?

A. We are working with the Education Funding Agency (EFA) to find a suitable site in the London Borough of Redbridge.
